Coronavirus Update - 23rd March 2020
From this morning all coronavirus calls must go through NHS24 on 111. This new service is being staffed by expert clinicians including specialists in Respiratory medicine. If you need to be seen they will arrange this with us in the surgery / hospital. This measure is designed to relieve pressure from GP surgeries so that we can cope with the increased demand which we expect very soon. If you have a fever or cough or shortness of breath that is new, please call 111. If it is an emergency (for example severe shortness of breath or chest pain) please continue to call 999 as before. Coronavirus Update - 18 March 2020
Lochgilphead Medical Centre are extremely grateful for the support of our local community at this difficult time. You will all be aware of the ever changing national guidance relating to this new viral illness- we know that this is unsettling and sometimes confusing. We would like to ask that all those with any concerns or queries regarding COVID-19 / Coronavirus look at the COVID-19 page on the NHS Inform website (www.nhsinform.scot) – this information is continuously updated and contains the advice which we will be passing on to anyone who calls the practice. Please only call the practice if the information obtained through NHS Inform suggests this is needed. At present, we continue to offer only telephone consultations initially and will only be seeing patients face-to-face where absolutely essential- this applies to both Practice Nurse and GP appointments. We hope that these measures, in combination with the social distancing measures which have been advised by the government and public health bodies, will lower the risk to our community and vulnerable patients. We are aiming to integrate our response with the fantastic community efforts we know are being started- if any community groups are setting up a support system for isolated or vulnerable families or individuals, please let us know and we can signpost our patients to these supports. Coronavirus Update - 17 March 2020
Please be advised we remain open. We have set up daily coronavirus updates for our clinical team each morning because the public health guidance is rapidly evolving. We will keep in contact with local pharmacies and allied healthcare professionals and inform you of any significant changes to our service via our website and Facebook group. Please use the NHS Inform website for updates - this is the guidance we will advise you to follow. It's possible it may be slightly different to the advice in England in the near future. Please also consider offering support to your elderly or vulnerable neighbours whether keeping them updated or helping with supplies, provided you are not self-isolating.

COVID-19 / Novel Coronavirus
In line with national guidance and after extensive local and regional discussion, Lochgilphead Medical Centre will be making some changes to our systems to ensure the safety of you, our patients.
From now, everyone wishing to book an appointment with a nurse will be required to answer screening questions from our reception staff and will only be able to book appointments for the same day. All appointments already booked will remain but we will contact everyone on the day of their appointment to ensure that they have not developed symptoms of possible coronavirus infection.
Our system for obtaining medical advice will remain the same - all individuals requesting an appointment will be phoned back by a clinician on the same day.
For individuals with respiratory symptoms (Cough, Shortness of Breath) or Fever who require examination, this will be arranged in the same way as at present. However, we have identified a room for these appointments and our staff will wear protective equipment in the form of gowns, masks and gloves in line with national and regional guidance.
Thank you all for your understanding at this time, please rest assured that our entire focus is on providing the highest quality healthcare for all of our patients under any circumstances. Further information on the situation nationally is available from NHS Inform.
March 2020 - The surgery are now using video consultations where useful
This follows a successful trial from Summer 2019 with select patients. You can use any device (smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop PC) but must use either the Chrome Browser or Safari Browser (Apple). Just click on the "Start Video Call" Button below and follow the guidance. Once in the "virtual waiting room" a clinician will connect your video call (providing you have been invited). Thank you.

Note on seeing the clinician of your choice - achieving continuity of care
Our clinicians will call you back as soon as possible after you call in. This website usually advertises who is taking calls on each day of the week. Please do not worry if you have a preferred clinican and it's not them who calls you back. All of our clinicians have the facility to book you directly to see a clinician of your choice (if needed and desired) either by phone or face to face. So if you speak to someone you don't know or just want to see someone else, that can always be organised from the first phone call back to you. And if you need some regular telephone follow up we can also organise this with the same person, if desired, so you get continuity of care. Please note that, particularly for some less obvious diagnoses, it's often very useful to see a different clinician as sometimes a second pair of eyes picks something up the first didn't think of.

Telephone First (call us anytime 8am to 4pm)
On 29th May 2017 we introduced a new approach to GP appointments, intended to make it easier and quicker for you to speak with a clinician. There is no need to book an appointment in advance. Instead you call the practice, provide a few words about the problem and a GP or advanced nurse practitioner will call you back, either morning or afternoon depending on when you make your appointment.
We use the information you provide to the receptionist to help the clinicians decide both if the call needs to be prioritised and who calls you back. The receptionist is bound by a duty of confidentiality. You don't have to share the (brief) problem but it's extremely useful if you do.
If a face to face appointment is agreed it’s almost always possible on the same day and the clinician has the discretion to choose who to book you with
When it’s important for you to see your GP this can usually be arranged on the phone.
Why Telephone First?
- We can consult with more patients.
- Those who need face to face appointments get them and usually on the same day (a big change from before).
- The majority of telephone consultations resolve the problem and avoid both you travelling to the surgery and an unnecessary face to face appointment.

Tell reception and we’ll agree a time to call you back and can usually call as near as possible to this time. This facility only works if used by those who really need it.

Tell us and we will ensure a note goes on your records to allow you direct access to a face to face appointment.
What is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner? Don't I need a GP?
Highly skilled nurses with additional specific training on independent clinical assessment. They can prescribe independently just like a GP. They can manage most problems and those they can’t they have direct access to a GP to discuss cases.
