The GPs in Lochgilphead have provided General Practice services in Inveraray and Furnace since 2016. A GP is present in Inveraray each day of the week from 9am until 5pm with the exception of Wednesday afternoons.  

Practice nurse appointments are available on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

Inveraray Surgery is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Between 5pm and 6pm all calls to the surgery will be diverted to Lochgilphead Medical Centre where any urgent messages can be taken. 

We strive to provide exactly the same range of services to patients registered with Inveraray and Furnace Surgeries as provided in Lochgilphead. This may sometimes involve asking our patients to travel to the Mid Argyll Community Hospital in Lochgilphead for certain services which require additional space and equipment such as Sexual Health and Minor Surgery.


We would like to thank our patients for their consideration at this time and advise that all the advice on our home page is equally relevant to patients in Inveraray and Furnace. A new NHS24 service for Coronavirus / COVID-19 related illnesses started on Monday 23rd March and all patients with new Fever or Cough or Shortness of Breath should call 111 in the first instance. If a face-to-face assessment is required, NHS24 will arrange this through the Coronavirus Assessment Centre based at the Mid Argyll Community Hospital. This service is equipped to ensure the safety of staff and patients in a way that is not possible in the Inveraray Surgery building. If you have the symptoms above, please do not attend the surgery and please follow the advice given on the NHS Inform website.

We also request that patients do not attend the Inveraray Surgery building unless specifically invited to do so. Please call us if you wish to speak to or see a GP or Practice Nurse. 

All prescriptions will be sent to your nominated pharmacy, please do not attend the surgery to collect these unless specifically advised to do so. All letters and certificates (e.g. Fitness for Work certificates) will be posted to your home address. 

At this time, we wish to emphasise to any individuals staying temporarily in our practice area that we will provide urgent and emergency care only. Those normally resident in other areas are requested to contact their registered GP to arrange prescriptions or routine care.

Finally, due to heightened demand on practice staff at this exceptional time and to limit the essential cleaning and maintenance required to maintain safety, we have taken the decision to close Furnace Surgery for the foreseeable future. All patients will be asked to attend Inveraray Surgery if required, though wherever possible we will attempt to manage problems over the telephone to limit the need for any face-to-face contact as per national public health guidance on social distancing. 

Telephone First (call us anytime 8am to 4pm)

On 1st October 2018 we extended our new approach to GP appointments to Inveraray and Furnace, intended to make it easier and quicker for you to speak with a clinician. There is no need to book an appointment in advance. Instead, please call the practice, provide a few words about the problem and a GP or advanced nurse practitioner will call you back, either in the morning or afternoon depending on when you make your appointment.

We use the information you provide to the receptionist to help the clinicians decide both if the call needs to be prioritised and who calls you back. The receptionist is bound by a duty of confidentiality. You don't have to share the (brief) problem but it's extremely useful if you do.

If a face to face appointment is required it’s almost always possible on the same day and the clinician has the discretion to choose who to book you with.

When it’s important for you to see your GP this can usually be arranged on the phone.

Why Telephone First?

-We can consult with more patients.

-The majority of telephone consultations resolve the problem and avoid both you travelling to the surgery and an unnecessary face to face appointment.

I need an exact time due to work/poor phone signal/other

Tell reception and we’ll agree a time to call you back and can usually call as near as possible to this time. This facility only works if used by those who really need it.

Due to disability I can’t use the phone

Tell us and we will ensure a note goes on your records to allow you direct access to a face to face appointment.
